La Rose-Trémière

Places to visit

Situated on the outskirts of Les Alleuds, in the small hamlet of La Petite Tranchée, La Rose-Trémière is an ideal centre for touring the local area.
Below are some of the places to visit locally:

This is the closest town, which has an open air market every Saturday, with two supermarkets and a beautifully preserved Chateau Jaerzay.

Market day Friday. It was here that the ancient kings of France (and the Romans) used to mine silver to use for minting their coins. The mines are open to the public and include an exhibition explaining the geology and the methods used for mining and producing coins. Completely encircling the town is the 'chemin de la decouverte', which is a pathway going through 230 species of rose and over 800 species of trees and shrubs.

About 30 mins drive away this historic town has a picturesque abbey with buildings and gardens open to the public. The restaurant is a good example of French cuisine.

La Rochelle
For centuries an important maritime port, now a major tourist centre near to the Ille de Re. The best way to see La Rochelle is to take a stroll around the Old Harbour (Vieux Port) and through the nearby network of pedestrianised streets or perhaps a short boat trip ferry service to the huge marina (La Minimus) and it's adjacent beach. The airport is serviced by Ryanair, Flybe and Easyjet and is 1.5 hrs drive away.

Famous for the locally made brandy, Cognac has been one of the main sources of wealth for the Poitou-Charente region. Most of the leading producers give guided tours.

An interesting old town with a lively centre, Futurescope , nearest TGV station and airport (only Ryanair) 50 mins drive.

Good outdoor market Fridays and plenty of restaurants, near to the centre of green Venice a series of waterways which can be 'discovered' by piloting a small hire boat.
